About Electronic Notice and Service
Self-represented individuals (pro se or proceeding without an attorney) may elect to receive electronic (email) notice and service of filings in cases to which they are a party. Electronic notice and service of filings are accomplished by a Notice of Electronic Filing (NEF) email that is generated through the court's CM/ECF system at the time an entry is made on a case docket. By electing to receive electronic notice of filings in a case, individuals waive their right to receive notice and service of filings by United States postal service and personal service.
The following documents cannot be served on any party electronically by email:
- A sealed document
- An adversary complaint and summons
- A subpoena
- A notice of the meeting of creditors
- Any other document where a statute, rule or court order specifies a different means of service.
How to Request Electronic Notice and Service
Self-represented individuals must:
- Have a valid email address for an active email account that they check frequently, and
- Complete, sign (with a handwritten, wet ink signature), and file with the court a Consent for Electronic Notice and Service ("Consent") form. *
*Each self-represented party who wants to receive electronic notice must file a separate Consent form, including each debtor in a joint case.
*If an individual is a party to more than one case, a separate Consent form must be filed in each case they wish to receive electronic notice (including related bankruptcy and adversary proceeding).
Once a self-represented individual submits a completed Consent form, the clerk's office will make a docket entry in the case identifying the individual and their email address. Once the docket entry is made, the parties in the case may send notice and serve documents to the self-represented individual electronically through CM/ECF.

How to View Filings Received by NEF
To view documents received electronically, individuals need Adobe Acrobat Reader. Documents may be opened and viewed one time free of charge. The "free look" of a document is provided to the individual the first time that the document hyperlink provided in the NEF is clicked. Make sure to save or print the document immediately upon activating the free look. Any additional views or downloads will require a PACER account (www.pacer.gov) and may require a fee.
How to Change an Email Address
If an individual's email address changes, a new Consent form must be completed and filed with the clerk's office.
How to Terminate Electronic Notice and Service
To stop receiving electronic notice and service and resume notification by U.S. Mail, individuals must complete and file with the court a Termination of Electronic Notice form. A separate form must be filed for each individual to terminate electronic service, including each debtor in a joint case. A separate form must be filed in each case in which an individual wants to terminate electronic notice (including related bankruptcy and adversary proceedings).
